Agreement
By using thebreedreport.com you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
Not veterinary advice
Everything here is general information about breeds, not advice about an individual animal. It is not a diagnosis, not a treatment plan, and not a substitute for a veterinarian examining an actual dog. Never delay seeking veterinary care because of something you read here. If your dog is unwell, call a vet.
What our figures mean
Our ownership figure covers purchase, food, grooming, boarding and routine veterinary care across a breed's measured median lifespan. It does not include the cost of treating illness. Health findings are reported separately, each in the units the study that measured them used, because converting different kinds of evidence into one expected figure was not defensible.
It is a model applied consistently, not a prediction about any particular dog. A dog that stays well will cost less than the total shown. A dog that develops one of the conditions on its page will cost more, and we do not put a number on how much more.
Prevalence figures describe the populations the underlying studies measured, which are largely British. Cost figures are American. Every page says which is which, and every figure carries a confidence grade. Figures graded D are estimates and are labeled as such wherever they appear.
We do not convert annual prevalence into lifetime risk. A one-year clinical rate, a lifetime owner-reported rate and a screening-registry proportion answer different questions and are not interchangeable, so each is shown as its source measured it. The methodology page explains why an earlier attempt to combine them was withdrawn.
Not financial or insurance advice
We show what premiums cost and what routine care costs, so the two can be compared. We do not publish a break-even point or an expected return for any breed, because that would require the expected-health-cost model we withdrew. Insurance is protection against an uncommon large bill, not a way to save money on predictable care.
We are not an insurance agency or producer. We do not sell policies, collect quote information, pre-qualify applicants or make personalised recommendations. Coverage decisions are between you and the carrier, and the exclusions written into your policy govern regardless of anything shown here.
Not breeder endorsement
We suggest which health certificates to ask a breeder for. We do not verify, endorse, rank or vouch for any breeder, kennel, rescue or seller, and we take no position on any specific transaction.
Accuracy and corrections
We work from published research and grade the strength of every figure. We will still get things wrong, and research supersedes itself over time. If you have a source that contradicts something here, send it and we will correct the page and note the correction. We make no warranty that the site is complete, current or error free.
Advertising
Some links are paid, and are labeled at the point of the link. An advertiser cannot buy a change to a figure, removal of a health finding, placement in a comparison, or a different breed ranking. See our advertiser disclosure.
Intellectual property
Our text, calculations, data model and design are ours. You may quote short passages with attribution and a link. You may not republish pages wholesale or scrape the dataset for a competing product.
Photographs are used under the licences shown beside them and belong to their photographers, most under Creative Commons terms requiring attribution. If you reuse an image, follow its license, not ours. Underlying research belongs to its authors and is cited on every page that uses it.
Third party links
We link to journals, registries and commercial partners. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or practices.
Limitation of liability
The site is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any decision made on the basis of information published here, including decisions about buying a dog, buying insurance, or pursuing or declining veterinary treatment. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States, without regard to conflict of law rules.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date above changes when we do, and continued use after a change means you accept the revised terms.
